What is Subtitled?
Subtitled puts live translated captions on your stream. When you talk to someone in another language, what they say appears on screen in your chat's language, usually within one to three seconds, and what you say can appear under your camera in theirs. It runs in Chrome and shows up in OBS as a caption overlay, so there is nothing to install.
How do I translate strangers live on stream on Omegle style video chat sites?
Open the video chat site in Chrome, open Subtitled in another tab, choose the chat site's tab as the stranger's audio, and drag the Stranger captions source into your OBS scene under their video. Subtitled listens to that tab, translates what the stranger says and puts it on screen. It works with any video chat site that runs in a browser tab, such as OmeTV, Chatroulette or Uhmegle.
Which languages does Subtitled translate?
Subtitled recognises speech in more than 60 languages and detects which one is being spoken on its own. Captions can be shown in any of 16 languages, English by default, so a Spanish or Arabic speaking streamer can caption strangers in their own chat's language. Arabic gets extra tuning for Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Moroccan dialects, and for the slang, political and religious phrases that come up in debate streams.
Can the person I am talking to read what I say in their language?
Yes. Turn on Translate your voice, pick their language or let Subtitled match the stranger, and drag the Your captions source under your camera. If the chat site uses OBS Virtual Camera, add it to that scene too so they see it. Wear headphones, otherwise your microphone hears them and translates them twice.
Does Subtitled work with Streamlabs, StreamElements, Twitch, YouTube or Kick?
Yes. Subtitled captions are a browser source, so they work in OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop and StreamElements, and on anything those apps stream to, including Twitch, YouTube and Kick. The streaming platform only ever sees the finished video with the captions already on it.
How fast are the live captions?
Subtitled captions usually land one to three seconds after the speaker, with a median of about 1.4 seconds in testing. Words appear while they are still being recognised and firm up when the sentence ends, so your chat is never waiting on a blank strip.
How accurate is the translation?
Subtitled is built on Soniox real-time speech recognition and translation. Tested against a recorded Arabic interview, about 85 to 90 percent of lines carried the right meaning. The usual misses are names, jokes and cultural references. Arabic slang and dialect phrases are tuned by hand, and you can add your own words, like your name or your chat's in-jokes, in Settings.
How much does Subtitled cost?
Your first hour of Subtitled is free. After that it is $1 per hour of caption time, sold in packs: $5 for 6 hours, $15 for 20 hours or $40 for 60 hours. Subtitled only counts time while it is listening to someone speak and stops during silence, so a long stream with pauses uses less than its length.
Can I change how the captions look?
Yes. Subtitled lets you change the typeface, size, text and outline colours, outline thickness or a solid box, bold and italic, and how many words stay on screen. The newest word can be highlighted, and slurs and threats can be flagged in red. Every change shows up in OBS straight away.
Is Subtitled private? Who can see my transcripts?
Subtitled transcripts are saved only in your own browser and are never sent to us, so nobody else can read them. Audio goes straight from your browser to Soniox for translation, and Soniox does not store live audio or transcripts or use them to train its models. There are no analytics, trackers or ads. Do I need to install a plugin?
No. Subtitled runs in Chrome or Edge, which are the browsers that can share a tab's audio. You add two browser sources to OBS by dragging them in, or by pasting a link, and that is the whole setup.
How do I get access to Subtitled?
Subtitled is invite only while we bring streamers on. An invite link creates your account and signs you in straight away, with your first hour free, and there is no password to set.
